Meet the Team: Head of Food Manufacturing Sales, Barrie Weavers

From bringing new ideas to life to building long-term customer relationships, there are many different roles that contribute to Place UK’s success.

Our ‘Meet the Team’ series gives us the chance to introduce some of the people behind the business and find out more about their roles, career journeys and what makes working at Place UK special.

This month, we’re catching up with Barrie Weavers, Head of Food Manufacturing Sales, who has been with Place UK for six years. Joining the business as a Business Development Manager, Barrie has progressed into his current role, working closely with customers to understand their needs and develop new opportunities.

No such thing as a typical day

With customers, projects and opportunities constantly evolving, Barrie’s role is varied and fast-paced.

“There really isn’t a typical day in sales, which is one of the things I enjoy most,” he says.

His focus is making sure customers are delighted with Place UK’s products, service levels and innovation, while building relationships that go beyond individual projects or products.

Barrie adds, “Place UK can be a collaborative and strategic partner, not just a supplier, so my role is all about helping to deliver sustainable growth for both our customers and our business too.”

A big part of Barrie’s role is understanding how customers operate, including their capabilities and product ranges, and identifying where Place UK can create genuine value, working together with clients to come up with new ideas and solutions.

From concept to consumer

One of the most rewarding aspects of Barrie’s role is seeing the end result of all that work.

“Seeing the ingredients and products we supply appear on shelves and in finished products across the UK is incredibly rewarding,” he explains. “It’s great to know that our team’s hard work contributes to products enjoyed by consumers every day.”

But getting a product onto the shelves can take considerably more work than people might realise.

“A product launch can take anywhere from nine to 12 months from concept to market,” says Barrie.

“Behind that finished product are countless samples, product refinements, customer discussions, factory trials and plenty of collaborative planning before it reaches full production.”

It’s a process that brings together teams and expertise from across the business, with sales playing an important role in connecting customer needs with what Place UK can deliver.

A place to build a career

Barrie was initially attracted to Place UK by the breadth of its product portfolio. More than six years later, he says it’s the opportunity to make a genuine impact that has kept him here.

He says, “I enjoy having the autonomy to help shape the future of the business, while adding value for our customers and building long-term partnerships.”

As a family business, Barrie also values the entrepreneurial mindset and long-term vision at Place UK.

“Decisions can be made with the future in mind, and there’s a strong sense of teamwork across the business, with everyone working together to achieve the same goals.”

He describes the culture as having a “true family feel”, with approachable and supportive colleagues who are willing to help each other out.

“There is a huge amount of knowledge across the business, but what stands out most is that people genuinely care about what they’re doing and who they’re doing it for,” he adds.

Learning and looking ahead

Barrie’s own career journey is something he’s particularly proud of.

“I’m proud of my personal growth and progression within the business. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside, and learn from, talented colleagues who have supported and challenged me throughout my journey, helping me develop both professionally and personally,” he explains.

That focus on learning continues to be an important part of Barrie’s role. One of his highlights from the past year was the opportunity to fully immerse himself in the world of beans and pulses, and play a part in shaping the future direction and growth of this exciting area of the business.

A favourite from the farm

When it comes to his favourite Place UK product, Barrie doesn’t have to think too hard.

“Our fresh blackberries are stand out. They’re one of my favourites to enjoy when they’re in season, and are a great example of the quality, premium products we’re proud to supply.”

And when it comes to advice, Barrie has a simple message that has stayed with him throughout his career:

“NO means Next Opportunity.”

It’s a fitting mindset for someone whose role is all about spotting opportunities, building relationships and finding new ways to create value for customers.

Barrie’s story is another example of the variety of career paths available at Place UK, and the opportunities that come with being part of a growing family business.

We’re looking forward to sharing more stories in the months ahead, so look out for our next ‘Meet the Team’ interview soon.
